WoodStuff has been a Shed Business for over 35 years, Jim Hayes is the owner and in the beginning the builder of the sheds, right from the beginning it has been a family business but Jim has the final decision.. Today at 78 years old he continues to build some sheds, picnic tables and other things that he enjoys working on. The majority of the sheds of which there is usually at least 30 in stock, are built either by Backyard Outfitters, a company that sells sheds in 7 states, those sheds are built in Cobleskill. Jim also has local Amish builders.
Woodstuff has two locations, one at 2399 St Hwy 30A where it was moved in 1992 between Johnstown & Fonda, on the corner of the Old Trail Rd. This property was part of the farm owned by Jim’s father. There is also another location at 2460 St Hwy 30 in Mayfield next to the Mobile Gas Station. The Mayfield lot is totally managed by Leeann( who also owns and operates Tribes Hill Deli), Jim’s youngest daughter, who also helped build sheds when he started the business many years ago.
At the start of the business the family lived in the old farm house located on the property, but eventually moved to another location and turned the house into a store. Several years ago the house was taken down and a one story more efficient building was built for the office and store.
Woodstuff carries a variety of sheds, everything from Playhouses, chicken coops, horse barns, lofted barn sheds, utility sheds, garages and also cabins. There is a large number on the lot to choose from or you can custom order a shed to meet your needs with a normal wait time of 3-6 weeks depending on the time of the year. Usually August through October being the busiest times and sometime because of the number of orders the wait could be longer. All sheds except for the very small ones include delivery in the price, within the first 30 miles, Deliveries can and are made further away at a per mile cost to the customer. There are an enormous amount of options available and decisions for the customer to make when custom building a shed. Jim is usually on the lot to help customers with those decisions, but when he is not there the people in the office are very knowledgeable about all that is available. They are family members, and include our daughter in law Tammy, granddaughters Jessica, and Kristiana and a son’s brother in law, Randy. When necessary Jim and his wife Donna will go to the customer’s property to determine if a shed can be gotten into the location that the customer wants it to go. There are several different delivery drivers, but also include Donna’s brother Randy.
Throughout the years all of the family has helped in various stages of the business, a daughter Laura (a teacher at FFCS) and sons Jim Jr and Jeff (Hayes Trucking & Excavating, and Hayes Brothers Pulling Team, 20 Mule Team and 3rd Generation) have prepped sheds sites, and/or delivered some of the larger sheds/cabins that have been built.
In addition to sheds, Woodstuff builds about 100 picnic tables yearly, but has the store in the building where the office is located. A variety of outdoor living furniture and more are in the store, originally most of which was wood, but some outdoor items have been replaces with poy lumber, which is a little higher priced, but will last almost forever. These things are Lighthouses, wells, bird houses, bird feeder, porch swings, deco signs and crafts. Most recently a couple of years ago the business also started to sell unique play gyms for children, everything from a simple swing with a platform to climb, to a dump truck, semi truck, helicopter, school bus(one is located at the Fonda Fultonville School in the back at the elementary playground), bulldozer, There is a big red wooden tractor right next to the store that was custom build to size of a pulling tractor that their sons use throughout the state at local fairs in the summer. Most of them come in various sizes and include an arm with various swings, slides, ladders on them for climbing and even more. Other types that can be ordered include castles, private ships, tractors and more.
So if you need outdoor furniture, kids swings or sheds of any kind Woodstuff is the place to go. All the sheds are QUALITY built and when looking for a shed be sure to check around and compare quality with price. Woodstuff sheds are still built with pressure treated lumber underneath where you don’t see it, and closest to the ground, as well as quality flooring since there are many kinds available now. Sheds are offered from the Board & Batten rough cut(usually green) lumber to T1-11, vinyl, metal and if you have something else in mind we will look at using that also. Backyard Outfitter sheds also have a written 5 year warranty, and 90 days is the same as cash. Rent to Own options are offered on all sheds and the swing sets.
